A woman who was stabbed in the neck in an unprovoked attack at a bus stop in Birmingham has passed away, police have confirmed.
The deceased woman, who was 34, came under attack on Smallbrook Queensway street, just outside Bullring shopping complex, just prior to 9 PM GMT Friday evening, according to police statements.
Djeison Rafael, 21, appeared before Birmingham court Monday morning, facing charges for the attack.
He was previously accused with attempted murder but following the victim's passing the charge has been updated to murder.
Police Response
Authorities stated officers would be in the downtown area through Monday providing public assurance, while detectives assisted the woman's family.
Investigators are requesting for witnesses who might have observed Mr Rafael, identified as a Black British national, and is believed to have been wearing an all-grey tracksuit, dark headwear, athletic shoes with a backpack.
Attack Site Details
The stabbing happened outside the Bullring shopping centre, across from primary access point of New Street railway station.
Law enforcement confirmed they classified it as "unprovoked attack" and Det Insp James Nix said they were working to understand the motive behind.
Witness Accounts
Shalini Doal, who works nearby, recounted the emergency response when she finished her work period around 10 PM Friday night.
She characterized the location as "quite chaotic", adding that co-workers reported hearing loud disturbances at about 21:00.
"Many co-workers use transit services, ride the tramline... our security is compromised essentially, here in the city centre."
Ashley Birks, twenty-five, resident of Stoke, said he came to Birmingham quite frequently visiting his partner who lives in the city, and was concerned regarding the incident.
"It causes concern for my girlfriend," he stated.
"She lacks transportation employed at major concert locations... considering something completely unprovoked occurred, you know, it's horrible."
