Major Web Failure Affects Many Websites and Apps
A widespread internet outage has impacted dozens sites and applications worldwide, with users reporting problems connecting to the web due to difficulties at the cloud computing service.
The affected services include Snapchat, Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, as well as several Amazon-owned platforms like its primary shopping site and the Ring device manufacturer.
Throughout Britain, the financial institution Lloyds was affected as well as its subsidiaries Halifax and the Scottish bank, and further notifications of problems accessing the HMRC website on that morning. Furthermore across the UK, many Ring device owners took to online platforms to state their home gadgets were failing.
Solely in the United Kingdom, reports of problems on individual platforms totaled the thousands for each app.
Officials confirmed that the outage began in the Atlantic coast of the America at Amazon Web Services, a unit that provides essential online backbone for numerous companies, who rent out capacity on Amazon servers. AWS is the biggest global online services system.
Just after late night (PDT) in the America (morning UK time), officials reported “elevated problem frequencies and delays” for Amazon's platforms in a zone on the eastern US of the America. The ripple effect appeared to affect apps worldwide, and the problem monitoring service indicating problems with the corresponding services in different parts of the world.
The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a platform that monitors online failures, also reported a rise in outages on that morning, with many of them situated in the state of Virginia, the site of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where officials confirmed the problems began.
